Ghost of Tsushima Review

ghost of tsushima

For the gaming universe, history based games has always been a treasure to the gamers. From the arrival and the impact of Assassin’s Creed franchise, we can judge the influence we had of different cultures from around the world. We enjoy their history, witness the moments and it becomes a part of us. Ghost of Tsushima brings the same joy and excitement to all of us. The Sucker Punch Productions has done an amazing job in developing a surprisingly beautiful landscapes, blade to blade combat in an open world scenario. It features stealth encounters, AI enemies and a lot more.

Ghost of Tsushima is based on ancient Japan, the age of Samurai. It features Mongol Empire from 1274 that began on the island named Tsushima. You will be playing the character named “Jin Sakai”, capably acted by The Man in the High Castle’s “Daisuke Tsuji”. The one who started off as a Samurai before the disastrous invasion happen. The event that taught him that perhaps the honorable but restrictive code of the Samurai code might not be enough to deal with this new threat.

Jin Sakai

The story of the game revolves around the will and efforts of Jin Sakai, who is willing to save his homeland. All he want is to put his training and pride to the service of his people. But the struggle is real. It takes time to get going along the path he chose. Even though, Jin Sakai is not the most charismatic character in the game.

The main antagonist from the game is known as “Khotun Khan”. He has the most charismatic presence in the game. Khotun Khan is played by Glee’s Patrick Gallagher. He is one of the best game villains from recent games. He gives this soft intensity that is oddly calming despite his terrifying intentions. This bad buy is extremely cunning. He tends to be always one step ahead of us. His aura makes this vengeance game worth a millions.

Voice

About voice cast, the English voice cast has done a phenomenal job, where it fails to get a better performance is for the Japanese voice action. So, when you choose to play with the excellent Japanese sound track, with the voice of Kazuya Nakai as jin, the other parts of audio feels cheap and mismatched lip flaps. And the emotions does not match the expressions. Still playing in Japanese is worth it.

Kurosawa Mode

This game gives you a beautiful mode called Kurosawa mode, which puts black and white filter over everything. It represents the classic Akira Kurosawa movie. Its a great way to witness the classic movies and Japanese culture in Kurosawa mode.

Music

The music in the game is as good as an icing to the cake. The casual roaming sometime gives you flutes music. While engaging in a fight, this music shifts from flute to Taiko drums and it gets intense along with the intensity of the fight. Overall the music fits each and every situation present in the game.

Controls

The controls are very easy to adapt as the feature same combat initiatives like Batman Arkham Knight, Assassin’s Creed, Sekiro, etc. Their are light attacks to quickly deal damage and beat out slower attacks. Heavy attacks deal more damage, which can also break through enemy guards. A block button to block certain attacks and a dodge button to avoid the unblock-able attacks.

What makes these controls special is that Jin can shift his fighting stance with just a push of a button. Proceeding further in story and quests, Jin unlocks new stances which can be changed with just a button press. Each stance comes with its own move-sets and their own importance versus a particular type of weapon. The stone stance is ideal for dealing with swordsman. Later on you will learn the water stance which helps in defeating shield-wielding enemies.

Gameplay

Their are four stances in total, and once you have unlocked all of them all fights will challenge you identify the level of threat and deal with it accordingly with the help of suitable stance. Some of the best thim=ngs this game provides is that when you defeat your enemy, he may try to escape you crawling away, you can wash the blood off your sword, you can pay tribute to the defeated enemies and lots more.

Improvements are necessary as upgrading armor, sward and charm helps is the combat as the game levels up the competition. But honing your skills always comes first. Improved skills will help in combat as most of the times enemies can out number you. Thats when the defensive skills are more crucial to have.

Their are also various tools and gadgets that Jin can acquire and use through out the adventure of the game. As Jin chose to bend his Samurai code, his weaponry increases along with his combat abilities. He can use Kunai knife to eliminate weakened opponents, he can throw sticky bombs to disorient enemy groups, or he can use the iconic bow to end a fight with a heavily armored samurai with just a head-shot.
