First, Make sure your external SSD is in operation. It needs to have a transfer speed of 5 Gbps or more. And it can’t be smaller than 250 GB or more than 8 TB. And you can’t connect the drive to the front of your PS5, or via a USB hub, it has to be connected directly to one of the USB slot available at the back of the console.

Second, Note that while the PS5 will accept external HDD, be aware that transfer rates will be affected, and are NOT recommended for PS5 games according to the Sony site. If you can take an SSD and not worry about taking a hit on storage, you should definitely do so.

  • Once you have your external drive connected internally, go to settings and go to storage.
  • You will see an option for Extended USB Storage, and there you will see your drive which will need to be formatted by PS5 to be used.
  • When you are done now you will see that our external drive is ready to go.

Third, Go to your console storage and go to games and apps where you will see a new tab from moving content.

  • Go to the Move PS5 Games tab, where you are greeted with a message informing you that if you move the game to the outside, you will have to turn it back before you can play it.
  • If you go back to the dashboard now you will see that the game is still appearing, but you have a USB storage icon, and when we have to say Play Games, we are greeted by Copy.
  • To copy the game back, go back to your storage and go to your extended USB storage where you will find the game waiting for it to be restored. Or, just click and copy right to the dashboard where the game will do as it downloads, but obviously very fast. And as a download, you will be notified even on the mobile app when the game is ready to play.

With this you can have your downloaded games with you, whenever you want to play, all you have to do is just copy the game pack to the internal storage of the console. This is a brief presentation on how to use a external device and how to move PS5 games to external storage.
